Making a motion design video, from storyboard to animation

To generate engagement, Motion Design videos need to be well executed. We take a look at the main steps to making your video a success.

Motion graphics, or motion design video, is an experience that not only visualizes data, but also tells a story. It's a type of content that encourages sharing and can easily go viral, ensuring your brand's visibility. But to generate engagement, Motion Design videos need to be well executed.

Considering that video is one of the most effective ways of conveying information quickly, motion design is high on the list of priorities for companies wishing to attract customers and prospects.

The main aspects of motion design video production

According to a Salesforce Research survey, 80% of customers say that a brand's experience is just as important as its products or services. This means that a poor-quality video could eliminate any chance of attracting new customers or making a sale. Particularly effective,Motion Design videos combine many elements in addition to animation, such as music, voice-over and sound effects.

The main steps in creating a Motion Design video

1 - The storyboard for an overall vision of your future video

The storyboard is an essential tool in the creation of motion design videos. It involves producing a detailed graphic representation of the progress, shot by shot, of the future project. Searching for a narrative idea, writing the script, defining the duration and number of graphic panels, 2D or 3D style... are all elements that will enable you to visualize the scenes to come and anticipate the technical constraints of filming. Each stage must be included in your Storyboard: characters, sets, landscapes... Each scene or shot must include annotations: visual and sound effects, specific movements... By enabling you to plan and organize the sequences of your animation, the storyboard provides a clear vision of the project and helps guide the teams throughout the creative process. Beyond that, it also enables you to anticipate technical constraints. It can be produced by hand or using specific software.

2 - The Moodboard to refine the project

Presented upstream of the storyboard, the Moodboard helps refine the visual style of the future project. Creating aesthetically pleasing visuals is one of the key aspects of motion design. This involves choosing colors, typography, shapes and motifs that are consistent with the visual identity of your project, on the one hand, and your graphic charter, on the other. The choice of color and typography can, beyond the aesthetic aspect, reinforce your message. Creativity also plays a fundamental role. It's important to explore new avenues and propose innovative visual solutions. This involves both animation techniques and transitions between graphic elements. The aim is to captivate the audience, arousing their interest and delivering your message. At this stage, each element is customized board by board. The Moodboard is the reference tool for visualizing the direction the project will take.

3 - Animation to bring visual elements to life

Then comes the animation stage: the project comes to life. This is the moment when each element appears in rhythm, linked to the voice-over and music, finding the links and transitions between each panel. To successfully convey your message in a fluid way, you need to take a few things into account, starting with keyframing. Keyframes are images that define the start and end points of an animation. It's the gradual adjustment of their position that gives the illusion of fluid, realistic movement. Another important point is the acceleration and deceleration curves, which give the animation a dynamic feel. Transitions are also essential at this stage, ensuring the fluidity and continuity of your Motion Design video and avoiding visual breaks. Finally, at this stage, sound design, voice-overs and subtitles all play their part in the success of your project.
